Urea formaldehyde resin is produced by the condensation of urea and formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst to form urea-formaldehyde resin, which is then converted into a non-melting, non-soluble resin adhesive—urea-formaldehyde adhesive—through the action of a curing agent or additives. It is the most widely used adhesive in the woodworking industry.
When mixed with fillers, pigments, curing agents, and plasticisers, urea-formaldehyde resin can be processed into urea-formaldehyde compression-moulding powder.
Furthermore, cured urea formaldehyde resin is lighter in colour than phenolic resin, appearing semi-translucent. It offers good insulation properties and excellent wear resistance. At the same time, urea formaldehyde resin is easy to colour, resulting in a wide variety of hues in the products.
In addition to the above excellent properties, urea-formaldehyde resins do, of course, have some drawbacks, such as poor weather resistance, poor initial tack, high shrinkage, high brittleness, poor water resistance and susceptibility to ageing. Engineered wood panels produced using urea-formaldehyde resins present issues with formaldehyde release during manufacture and use; therefore, modification is essential.
Please note that although urea-formaldehyde resins possess many excellent properties, they may exhibit shortcomings under specific conditions. Therefore, when applying urea-formaldehyde resins, their suitability and potential limitations must be fully considered.
The preparation process for urea-formaldehyde resin is relatively simple, with urea and formaldehyde as the primary raw materials. Through a condensation reaction, urea and formaldehyde can form a low-molecular-weight initial product solution; upon vacuum drying, the solid urea-formaldehyde resin is obtained. Consequently, its applications are extremely wide-ranging, primarily in the following areas:
In summary, urea formaldehyde resins are simple to produce and have a wide range of applications, providing convenience for both production and daily life.
