What is melamine moulding compound?

Melamine Moulding Compound (MMC), also known as melamine resin powder, is a material made from melamine formaldehyde resin as the main ingredient, combined with cellulose as the base material, and added with pigments and other additives. Due to its three-dimensional network structure, it falls under the category of thermosetting materials, which means it cannot be recycled once processed.

Grades

Melamine powder is scientifically named melamine formaldehyde resin, abbreviated as “MF”, it is classified by:

A1 Melamine: Containing 30% melamine resin, with the remaining 70% consisting of additives, starch, etc. This grade retains some plastic properties, is not heat-resistant, stain-resistant, or corrosion-resistant, and has a rough appearance with a tendency to deform, discolor, and lack gloss.

A3 Melamine: Containing 70% melamine resin, with 30% additives and starch, closely resembling the appearance of the genuine A5 grade. However, products made from this grade are prone to staining, discoloration, deformation under high temperatures, and corrosion vulnerability.

A5 Melamine: Consisting of 100% melamine resin, this grade is non-toxic, odorless, heat-resistant from -30 to 120 degrees Celsius, impact-resistant, corrosion-resistant, lightweight, and offers excellent insulation properties. Products made from A5 grade have a high surface hardness, glossy finish, scratch resistance, and clear printed patterns.

MMC powder exhibits self-extinguishing properties, fire resistance, impact resistance, good crack resistance, high-temperature and high-humidity stability, solvent resistance, and good alkali resistance.
