It is commonly grouped with urea-formaldehyde resin under the term “amino resin.” During the processing of melamine formaldehyde resin, it undergoes a cross-linking reaction, resulting in a non-melting thermosetting resin.
Firstly, let’s start by discussing the physical characteristics of cured melamine formaldehyde resin. It is colorless and transparent, and remains stable when exposed to boiling water. It also possesses self-extinguishing properties, favorable mechanical attributes, and resistance to electrical arcs.
Melamine formaldehyde resin is created by reacting melamine with a 37% aqueous solution of formaldehyde. The resulting product’s molecular composition varies depending on the specific reaction conditions. The properties of the resin can range from being water soluble to insoluble in water.
Melamine formaldehyde resin is a versatile compound that has numerous applications across various industries. It is commonly used in the leather industry as a pre-tanning, retanning, and haniwa resin. Additionally, it is used in the paper industry as a wet reinforcement and water resistance agent.
The coating industry also utilizes this compound as a waterborne coating crosslinking agent, which is widely used in household appliances, automobiles, and other industries.
Moreover, in the mold and plastic industry, its flame retardant, high-temperature resistance, pollution resistance, safety, and health advantages make it ideal for use in electrical parts, tableware, daily necessities, and other products.
Apart from these industries, melamine formaldehyde resin also serves as a ceramic and cement dispersant, wood binder, textile finishing agent, and wastewater treatment flocculant.
Melamine formaldehyde resin is largely consumed in the wood processing industry in China, accounting for 56% of the total consumption. The remaining consumption is divided among industries such as dry coating, molding board, leather manufacturing, textile, paper making, and others. It is worth noting that about 50% of melamine produced in China is exported. The highest domestic demand is in regions like Guangdong, Guangxi, southern Jiangsu, which has an annual demand of about 12,500 tons.
