What is the difference between automotive grade urea Vs industrial urea?

automotive grade urea vs industrial grade urea

The main differences between automotive urea and industrial-grade urea are in terms of quality requirements, production targets, uses, and prices.

The following is a detailed different introduction:

  • Quality Requirements

Urea for vehicles is a colorless, transparent, and clear liquid with a concentration ranging from 31.8% to 33.2%. It is used for reducing NOx emissions. The automotive  urea solution currently used is generally composed of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionized water.

It must meet extremely high purity standards. Because it is directly injected into the exhaust system of diesel vehicles, any impurities in urea can cause blockage or malfunction of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, leading to increased emissions and potential damage to the vehicle’s exhaust aftertreatment components.

On the other hand, industrial-grade urea contains substances such as biuret, mechanical impurities, and metal ions, which are insoluble and impurities that are not found in Vehicle urea. Industrial-grade urea does not have the same level of purity as Vehicle urea, so it is generally not used as Vehicle urea. If industrial-grade urea is used, the resulting automotive urea may have more impurities and be prone to crystallization.

  • Production Indicators

There are several indicators that can be used to compare Vehicle urea and industrial-grade urea. Almost all component indicators of industrial-grade urea are higher than those of automotive urea, especially biuret and insoluble substances. In addition, Automotive urea must not contain sulfides and chlorides, while industrial-grade urea has relatively lax restrictions on these substances.

In addition, automotive urea should also add some antifreeze, preservatives, and other substances, to adapt to different seasons and temperature changes.

  • Different Uses About Automotive Urea And Industrial Urea

Automotive urea is mainly used in SCR systems to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides from diesel vehicles;

Industrial-grade urea is mainly used in fertiliser, latex, synthetic resin, and other industries.

  • Price

The price of automotive urea is usually higher than that of industrial-grade urea due to higher production standards and quality requirements.

  • Quality control in the production process

Automotive grade urea undergoes strict quality control and testing procedures. Manufacturers must ensure that urea meets specific standards set by automotive regulatory agencies. Conduct tests to measure parameters such as purity, density, refractive index, and the presence of contaminants. These tests are conducted regularly during the production process and on the final product to ensure optimal performance of urea in the vehicle’s SCR system.

Industrial urea also requires quality control, but the testing methods and standards are different. The focus is more on parameters related to its use in industrial processes, such as nitrogen content, amount of biuret, and reactivity in chemical synthesis. The quality control of the industrial urea industry aims to ensure that urea meets the production requirements of specific industrial products and does not have any adverse effects on the entire manufacturing process.

Can industrial urea replace automotive Grade urea?

Although industrial grade urea and automotive urea are basically the same in chemical composition, there are big differences in production process and quality standards. Therefore, industrial grade urea can not completely replace automotive urea.

Suppose industrial-grade urea is used instead of automotive urea, on the one hand, in the SCR system. In that case, the impurities and ammonium ions that may be contained in the industrial urea will affect the normal operation of the system, and may even lead to malfunctions.

On the other hand, industrial-grade urea does not contain antifreeze and other additives, which will have a great impact on the SCR system that is used in a low-temperature environment.
