What is Melamine polyphosphate?

It is an important chemical intermediate and a halogen-free, nitrogen-phosphorus-expanding flame retardant.

The chemical structure of this ester makes it exhibit excellent flame retardant properties in applications, and therefore, it is widely used in various materials that require flame retardant treatment to improve the safety and fire resistance of materials.

It is also abbreviated as MMP.

IUPAC names”1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine monophosphate”.

Melamine polyphosphate characteristic

It is a white powder.

Environmentally friendly, with excellent flame retardant performance, low smoke emission, and low smoke density.

Low water solubility, non hygroscopic.

Soluble in DMSO (small amount), methanol (small amount)

Flame Retardant Prowess: MMP is a halogen-free, nitrogen-phosphorus expanding flame retardant. Its chemical structure enables it to interfere with the combustion process effectively. During a fire, it releases non-combustible gases such as ammonia and water vapor, diluting the flammable gas concentration and reducing the heat release rate. This not only suppresses the spread of flames but also forms a protective char layer on the material surface, acting as a barrier against heat and oxygen. For instance, in tests on plastics containing MMP, the time to ignition and the rate of flame propagation were significantly reduced compared to non-flame-retarded counterparts.

Environmental and Health Profile: As an environmentally friendly option, MMP offers advantages over traditional halogenated flame retardants. It minimizes the release of toxic and corrosive gases during combustion, reducing potential harm to both the environment and human health. Its low smoke emission and density are particularly valuable in enclosed spaces, improving visibility and reducing the risk of smoke inhalation during a fire.

Physical and Processing Attributes: Presented as a white powder, MMP is easy to handle and incorporate into various manufacturing processes. It exhibits good thermal stability, with a decomposition temperature above 350 ℃, allowing it to withstand the processing temperatures of many plastics, which can reach up to 300 ℃. Its low water solubility and non-hygroscopic nature ensure its stability during storage and use, preventing issues such as clumping or degradation due to moisture absorption.

preparation method

The preparation of melamine phosphate is usually carried out in two steps:

1. Synthesis of polycyanamide: Cyanuric acid is condensed and reacted with formaldehyde under alkaline conditions to produce polycyanamide.

2. Phosphorylation: Polycyanamide is reacted with phosphoric acid at high temperatures to produce melamine phosphate.

What is melamine pyrophosphate used for?

1.Solid thermal plastics: TPu, PA,PP, Nylon, PBT, PET and related engineering plastic, PE (HDPE, LDPE), POM, HIPS, PPO .. etc.

2.Thermal Setting: Phenol, Epoxy, Unsaturated Polyester, Polyester Resin, Acrylic Resin ..etc.

3.Plastic Industry: EPDM, CR, NBR, SBR, SIR, CSM, NR, and various types of flame-retardant rubber.

4.Elastomers: TPE, TPU, SBS, SEBS, TPR, TPV, and other types of elastomers.

5.Other Products: Printing ink, pigment, printing backing glue, flame-retardant masterbatch, plastic panels, paper, furniture plywood, various types of flame retardants for electronic products, and flame-retardant inflatable paint.

Safety precautions

1.It can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Please avoid contact.

2. When handling this, appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves and eye protection should be worn.

3. Melamine phosphate should be stored in a dry and well-ventilated place to avoid contact with oxidants and strong acids.

4.When encountering a fire source, it can produce toxic gases and should be kept away from open flames and high temperatures.

5.If you accidentally ingest or inhale melamine phosphate, please seek medical attention immediately and inform the doctor of the relevant details.
